Terms of Service.

The terms that govern your use of the Submersion app. The short version: it is free, it is yours, and it is not a dive computer.

App: Submersion · Last updated: 2026-07-11

Acceptance of Terms

By downloading, installing, or using Submersion (the "App"), you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the App.

The Service

Submersion is a local-first dive logging application for scuba divers. It allows you to record dives, manage dive sites and gear, download data from dive computers, view statistics and dive profiles, and optionally link photos and back up your data using third-party services you choose to connect.

Submersion does not operate any remote servers and does not require you to create an account. All of your data is stored locally on your device. See our Privacy Policy for details on how your data is handled.

License and Open Source

Submersion is free and open-source software, released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 (GPL-3.0). Your use, copying, modification, and distribution of the App's source code are governed by that license. See the LICENSE for the full text.

These Terms of Service govern your use of the App as a service and are separate from the software license.

No Charge

Submersion is provided free of charge. There are no accounts, subscriptions, advertisements, or in-app purchases.

Acceptable Use

You agree to use the App only for lawful purposes and only with data and accounts you are authorized to access. You agree not to:

  • Use the App to violate any applicable law or the rights of others
  • Reverse engineer or interfere with the App except as permitted by the GPL-3.0 license
  • Use any connected third-party service in a manner that violates that service's own terms

Third-Party Services

Submersion can optionally connect to third-party services that you enable. These include, among others:

  • Cloud storage providers (such as Google Drive) for user-initiated backups
  • Apple HealthKit for reading dive workout data on iOS
  • Adobe Lightroom for associating your own photos with your dive log entries

Each of these integrations is optional and operates only on the accounts and data you explicitly connect. Your use of any third-party service through the App is also subject to that provider's own terms of use and privacy policy, and Submersion is not responsible for the practices, availability, or content of those third-party services. When you connect Adobe Lightroom, your access to Adobe's services is governed by Adobe's applicable terms.

Your Data and Responsibility

You are responsible for the data you enter and for maintaining your own backups. While Submersion offers optional backup features, you are solely responsible for ensuring your dive records are backed up and recoverable. We are not responsible for any loss of data resulting from device failure, uninstallation, synchronization, or your use of third-party services.

Dive Safety Disclaimer

Submersion is a dive logging and record-keeping tool. It is not a dive computer, dive planner, or life-support device, and must not be relied upon for any purpose on which your safety depends.

  • Do not use the App to plan dives, calculate decompression obligations, monitor gas, or make any in-water safety decisions.
  • Always rely on a certified, purpose-built dive computer and proper training for dive planning and safety.
  • Data downloaded from or displayed for dive computers may be incomplete or inaccurate and is provided for record-keeping and review only.

Scuba diving is an inherently hazardous activity. You dive at your own risk and are solely responsible for your own safety, training, and compliance with safe diving practices.

Disclaimer of Warranties

The App is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the App will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of harmful components.

Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, in no event shall the developers or contributors of Submersion be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, or diving records, arising out of or related to your use of or inability to use the App, even if advised of the possibility of such damages.

Changes to These Terms

These Terms of Service may be updated from time to time. Changes will be reflected by updating the "Last Updated" date at the top of this document. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
